A Practical EV Charger Cost Guide for Australian Homeowners in 2025

  • Written by Asian Spectator

The shift toward electric vehicles in Australia is accelerating, and more households are preparing to install home chargers. Understanding the pricing involved can be challenging, given how much installation cost varies between homes. This EV charger cost guide breaks down the major factors influencing installation pricing so homeowners can make informed decisions.

A standard installation, suitable for most modern homes, typically falls between $850 and $1,200. These cases involve short cable runs, modern switchboards with available space, and easy access to the charger mounting location. This setup is common for many suburban properties with garages or carports.

Some installations require additional labour, particularly when the switchboard is located far from the proposed charging location. Cable runs longer than 10 metres can push pricing toward $1,200 to $1,800. Homes with unusual layouts or requiring external conduit may land toward the higher end of this range.

Switchboard condition is a major factor. Older boards with outdated wiring or no available space often need to be upgraded to support EV charging. These upgrades can cost $1,500 to $2,500 depending on the home’s electrical infrastructure. While this adds to initial cost, it improves safety and prepares the home for future electrical upgrades.

Three-phase charging is another cost consideration. Homes with three-phase power can install faster 22kW chargers, but the installation cost is typically higher, ranging from $1,800 to $2,600. These chargers are ideal for high-mileage EV owners or multi-vehicle households.
