A 1,600-Km Journey Across Thailand to Champion Sustainable Travel

  • Written by Asian Spectator

With 83 per cent of global travellers prioritising sustainable tourism, Thailand is adapting its approach to meet evolving traveller expectations. As the country continues its post-pandemic tourism recovery, eco-conscious travel is emerging as a key driver of growth.

Tim Kroeger, creator of Universal Traveller, recently completed a 16-day, 1,600-kilometre bikepacking journey from Bangkok through northern Thailand, highlighting the economic and environmental advantages of slow travel. With tourism contributing nearly 20% to Thailand’s GDP, initiatives promoting sustainability are critical to ensuring long-term growth across both urban and rural communities.
Bikepacking, a growing segment within adventure tourism, provides an alternative to traditional tourism models. It extends visitor spending beyond major cities, fostering direct engagement with local businesses, and reducing the environmental footprint of travel.

“Thailand’s warmth, generosity, and history make it a truly unique destination,” said Tim Kroeger
“Bikepacking allows travellers to immerse themselves in local life, from traditional villages to historic landmarks, while treading lightly and experiencing the real beauty of Thailand.”

Thailand’s Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has actively been promoting sustainability-driven initiatives to future-proof its tourism sector. The push for eco-conscious travel aims to mitigate the impact of seasonal fluctuations and mass tourism.

“By promoting eco-friendly tourism practices, we’re creating meaningful experiences for travelers while also supporting local communities,” explained Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

“Cycling, particularly bikepacking, aligns with our vision of sustainable tourism, offering a deeper connection to Thailand’s rich culture and helping to reduce the impact of seasonal tourism.”

As Thailand continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable tourism, cycling infrastructure and adventure travel experiences could play a larger role in its long-term tourism growth strategy.
