What kind of student saver are you?

  • Written by NewsServices.com

We all understand the importance of saving. After all, bar any unforeseen giant lump sums funnelled into our accounts, saving is the only way we can afford to move homes, buy new cars, book flights and do a lot of other fun things that come with being an adult.

But there are different ways to go about saving. Some people do it without thinking, their thrifty nature allowing them to save more than they spend, while others have to consciously think about how much they are spending, where they can cut down and how they can save.

So, what kind of student saver are you? Whether you’re saving for a trip, moving house or paying back your Melbourne business school loans, here are the different kinds of savers putting their money away the best way they know how.

  1. The thrifty business business

Thrifty savers love nothing more than an awesome bargain to help them hang on to their cash. Whether it’s shopping exclusively at op-shops/savers, looking out for every sale at Woolies and looking out for coupons in their local shopping magazines - the thrifty saver is all about squeezing every penny until they add up and buy something awesome.

However, buying something just because it’s on sale doesn’t mean you’re actually saving, as you might not have actually needed said product in the first place. The best thing to do when you see these cheaper items is to ask yourself if you really need it just because it’s currently cheaper. If you find you don’t - don’t buy it - simple!

  1. The procrasti-saver

This is the kind of person that likes the idea of saving, but they’re waiting for the right time. They’re waiting until that extra coin comes into their account on a routine basis and gives them the green light for putting money away. Students typically aren’t on the largest incomes, and it can be hard to consider saving if it’s not going to be much each week, but every little bit counts, of course!

If you’re one of the people that currently grimaces at the thought of saving, why not try giving it a go? One awesome way to try saving for the first time is by following the “50/30/20” budget. This system works by putting 50% of what you earn into essentials like bills, rent, food etc., putting 30% of what you earn into extras like clothes and going out, with the final 20% going into savings - you’ll be surprised at how much it adds up over time.

  1. The clever spender

This is the kind of person who saves without really considering it. They are naturally thrifty and might not rely on too many extra costs to get them through the month. While many of us might find ourselves spending $100 at the local bar or pub on a Saturday night, they might be kicking back, watching a flick or reading a book. You might not like the sound of this yourself, but hey, it works for them and it helps them save a heap of money, too.

If you’re already on this saving tip - keep doing what you’re doing - we’re sure you are already well aware of its benefits.

Which category do you fall under?

Saving can be difficult or it can be easy depending on how you go about doing it. Are you a cautious, thrifty spender? Or does saving just happen naturally to you? Either way, it’s always a good idea to put some money away - you will see it grow over time and this is always a good feeling.
